Pastor’s Perspective/ Perspectivo del Párroco
Spirited Times - September 2007

The parish year that we have just begun is a significant one in the life of our parish community.  A pastor is assigned to a parish for a term of six years, which is usually renewed for a second six-year term.  After twelve years, Archdiocesan policy expects the pastor to accept a new assignment unless he is approaching retirement; a new pastor is assigned to the parish that he will be leaving.  Fr. George Kane, our founding pastor, was an exception to this rule and served this community as pastor for our first twenty-four years.  I have been blessed to serve among you for the past eleven years as the second pastor of CHS.  I also believe that the “twelve-year policy” is basically a good one that allows parishes and pastors to grow in new ways amid new challenges and circumstances.  As a result, I expect that my time as pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit will end on June 30, 2009.

Most of us experience both anxiety and resistance to change the farther we move out of our teen years.  I acknowledge a bit of both as I begin to pray about what will be a major transition in my priesthood.  At the same time, I trust in the power of resurrection to transform us in the midst of change and the desire of the Holy Spirit to strengthen, renew, and even pleasantly surprise us as we move through times of change.

Two years ago, the Archdiocese introduced a new process for appointing pastors to parishes that both respects the rhythm of parish life and the importance of creating the most effective relationships of pastors and parish communities.  This process will occur over a one-year period beginning next July 1.  During the fall months, our Vicar, Bishop George Rassas, our Dean, Fr. Bob Tonelli, and a member of the Priest Placement Board will spend some time getting to know this parish and its needs and hopes for the future.  Pastors about to be reassigned and associate pastors interested in becoming pastors have the opportunity to visit the parishes on the assignment list; Church of the Holy Spirit has the opportunity to invite priests to consider this parish.  In January, the Cardinal, the Vicars, and the Placement Board meet over several days to discern the best “match” of available priests and parishes seeking pastors.  The new assignments are announced in March and begin the following July 1.

That makes this a year of “getting ready” to present Church of the Holy Spirit to the Archdiocese and to any priests who may consider becoming our third pastor.  This includes a review of our many liturgical, formational, and outreach ministries, our physical plant, and our financial records.  At future Parish Town Hall meetings, we will discuss the formation of a Transition Team and the many ways in which you can participate in this important process.

In the meantime, we are off to a great start to the parish year.  August brought our first annual Ice Cream Social and Summer Concert.  September brings commissioning ceremonies for all parish ministers, the annual Kingdom Retreat Weekend, a Recognition Day for parish volunteers, an adult formation series on Vatican II, and our annual Fall Festival (pot luck dinner and square dancing).  October brings the annual Craft Bazaar and a new family activity for Halloween Night.  We remain a vibrant and diverse community who welcome all to unite in the Spirit, to serve in Jesus, and to reach out in love.

May we continue to trust in the Spirit to guide us and so generously give ourselves to God’s work in and through us.

Perspectivo del Párroco

Esta edición de Spirited Times es parte de nuestros esfuerzos de ser más creativos y cuidadosos con los recursos de tiempo, talento y tesoro que nosotros, los miembros de Church of the Holy Spirit, proveemos para hacer posible nuestra misión y nuestros ministerios.  Las otras tres ediciones llegarán a su casa por correo como en el pasado.  Gracias a Mark Hoske, nuestro redactor, a Ed Atwell, nuestro administrador de la página web, y a todos los que han compartido su tiempo y talento para hacer posible esta edición.

El año parroquial que acaba de comenzar es uno importante en la vida de nuestra comunidad de fe.  Un párroco esta nombrado a una parroquia por un tiempo de seis años con la asunción que servirá por unos seis años más.  Después de doce años la Arquidiócesis espera que el párroco esté nombrado a otra parroquia, si no se acerca su año de retirar, y que la parroquia recibirá un párroco nuevo.  Padre George Kane, nuestro párroco primero, era una excepción a esta política y sirvió esta comunidad como párroco durante los primeros 24 años.  Dios me ha bendito por la oportunidad de servirles durante los últimos once años como el segundo párroco de CHS.  También creo que la política de “doce años” es algo bueno que permita que las parroquias y los párrocos crezcan por varias maneras entre nuevos retos y circunstancias.  De resultas, espero que mi tiempo como párroco de Church of the Holy Spirit terminará el 30 de junio, 2009.

La mayoría de nosotros experimentamos ansiedad y resistencia en confrontar los cambios después de nuestra adolescencia.  Confieso que experimento un poco de los dos en rezar sobre esta transición significativa en mi sacerdocio.  A una vez, confió en el poder de la resurrección de transformarnos en medio de los cambios y el deseo del Espíritu Santo de esforzarnos, renovarnos, y sorprendernos en los tiempos de cambios.

Hace dos años, la Arquidiócesis comenzó un nuevo proceso para designar los párrocos.  Este proceso respeta los ritmos de la vida parroquial y la importancia de establecer relaciones efectivas entre los párrocos y las parroquias que sirven.  Este proceso ocurrirá durante el año que comienza el 1 de julio.  Durante el otoño de 2008, nuestro Vicario, el Obispo George Rassas, nuestro decano, Padre Bob Tonelli, y un miembro del Equipo de Colocación de Sacerdotes tomarán la oportunidad de conocer mejor esta parroquia, sus necesidades, y sus esperanzas.  Los párrocos que van a cambiar de parroquia y los sacerdotes asociados que quieren hacerse párrocos tienen la oportunidad de visitar a las parroquias que van a recibir párrocos; Church of the Holy Spirit tiene la oportunidad de invitar a unos sacerdotes que consideren esta parroquia.  En el mes de enero, el Cardenal, los Vicarios, y el Equipo de Colocación se reunirán durante unos días para discernir la combinación mejor de los sacerdotes disponibles con las parroquias que necesitan párrocos.  Nombrarán los nuevos párrocos de cada parroquia en marzo para que puedan comenzar el siguiente 1 de julio.

Por eso, este año es un año de prepararnos para presentar Church of the Holy Spirit a la Arquidiócesis y a los sacerdotes que tienen interés en hacerse nuestro tercer párroco.  Este proceso incluye un repaso de nuestros varios ministerios de liturgia, formación, y servicio, de nuestra planta física, y de nuestras finanzas.  En las Conjuntos Parroquiales (Town Halls) de este año, vamos a discutir la formación de un Equipo de Transición y las maneras en que pueden participar en este proceso tan importante.

En medio, comenzamos un año nuevo en la vida de la parroquia.  En agosto, pasó nuestro primer “Ice Cream Social.”  En septiembre mandamos de nuevo a todos los ministros de la parroquia y ofrecemos el “Kingdom Retreat,” un “Día de Gracias” para los voluntarios de la parroquia, y la Festival Anual del Otoñó (cena de “pot luck” y baile).  En octubre tendremos el Bazar de Artículos Hechos por Mano y una actividad nueva para familias en la noche de “Halloween.”  Seguimos como una comunidad viva y diversa que invita a todos unirse en el Espíritu, servir en Jesús, y extender la mano en amor.

Que confiemos en el Espíritu para guiarnos y que nos ofrezcamos con generosidad al trabajo de Dios dentro y por medio de nosotros.
