Prophets provide perspective; are we listening?
Spirited Times - September 2007

By MARK T. HOSKE

The following is based on a few notes from Fr. George Kane’s homily on Aug. 19, 2007. Fr. George, founding pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit, continues to help as Pastor Emeritus.

The prophet Jeremiah told those in power things they didn’t feel comfortable hearing. He wasn’t serving the interests of the privileged and was tossed into a cistern, left for dead. Prophets provide perspective for us, if we listen.

I invite you to meditate, have a conversation with God, and talk about all the prophets in your life. Many throughout history and today, Catholic and not, have embarrassed authority and raised issues beyond what’s lawful, looking at what’s compassionate beyond the secular. They’ve been, and continue to be persecuted and even killed, often only recognized for their wisdom after their death. Pope Paul VI said if you want peace, seek justice.

Little virtues give a little light. Forgive and we will be forgiven.

Let us open our lives and our hearts to the light that we encounter.

Fr. George is leading a six-week series on the major documents of the Second Vatican Council (see related story in this issue).

On Pentecost (May 27), the Feast Day of Church of the Holy Spirit, Fr. George Kane, reminded parishioners that being Catholic means there are no easy answers. The Holy Spirit remains God’s gift to us, the community of faith that we call the church. May the fire of the Holy Spirit make our hearts burn with pure light.
